Data leak, false estimate take toll on firm's image

Automatic Data Processing Inc. has gotten its wires crossed lately.

Earlier this month, the paycheck-processing specialist disclosed that it was duped into giving out confidential client information. ADP also caused a stir in the bond market when its much-discussed research, designed to forecast monthly U.S. employment data, didn't come close to matching the government's official numbers.

LEAK NEWS - RIVERSIDE, CA: City workers' personal information was mistakenly sent out to everyone's inbox

RIVERSIDE - Almost 2,000 Riverside city employees have been encouraged to place fraud alerts on their credit reports to prevent identity theft following an e-mail slip-up last Thursday.

Chief Information Officer Steve Reneker said an information technology worker inadvertently sent a routine e-mail intended for the payroll department to every inbox on the city's system. The e-mail had an attachment with the names, addresses, Social Security numbers and 401(k) account numbers of 1,974 city employees.
